Jet Airways has dropped plans indefinitely to start dedicated freighter services, as it doesn’t find market conditions conducive, said two people in the know. India’s second-biggest airline by market share had in February applied to the country’s aviation regulator for approval. It currently flies cargo in the belly hold of its passenger aircraft.
“The launch of dedicated freighter operations by Jet Airways has been deferred indefinitely due to commercial and operational reasons,” said a spokesman at Jet. “Internal processes and framework are in place at Jet Airways and our strategic partner Etihad Airways to allow the initiative to progress at a later date,” he added.
Jet had plans to wet lease an Airbus A330200 F freighter plane from its strategic partner Etihad Airways. The Abu Dhabi based airline owns 24% in Jet. Sources said the airline had plans to fly freighter planes to neighbouring countries.

NEW DELHI: Private carrier Jet Airways today put 1-million economy class seats up for sale, with a flat 25 per cent discount for a limited period, on its domestic network.
Jet Airways operates across 51 destinations in India.
The four-day mega fare offer will be available for sale from May 27 to 30 and valid for travel from June 15 to October 15, the airlines said in a release.
The four-day booking period offer is valid for economy class travel on the airline’s domestic network, it said.
The 25 per cent discount offer is for travel only on direct flights on the airline’s domestic network, Jet Airways said adding it is not applicable on group bookings and available on a first come, first serve basis.
Jet Airways has introduced a series of new flights connecting some of India’s fast emerging cities. The new services have already commenced and will connect Ahmedabad with Bhopal and Indore. The airline has also started flights from Ahmedabad to Hyderabad and Pune. The Ahmedabad-Bhopal-Indore-Ahmedabad route and the Ahmedabad-Pune-Hyderabad service will both operate six days a week (every day except Saturday), using Jet’s 68-seat ATR turboprop aircraft. “Jet Airways is pleased to announce new flights linking Ahmedabad with Bhopal-Indore, as well as Hyderabad-Pune, following an increased demand from industry as well as tourist traffic,” says Raj Sivakumar, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways.
As per a Business Standard report by Aneesh Phadnis, Jet Airways (India) Ltd plans to sell all its wide-body Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 planes to raise cash and retire a portion of its Rs 12,000-crore debt.
Jet Airways has a fleet of 117 planes, a mix of turboprop, narrow-body and wide-body planes. It flies the Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s to London, Paris, Brussels, Newark, Toronto and Hong Kong.
While the airline says it has no plans to reduce its international operations, the management is exploring both an outright sale and sale & lease back of its wide-body planes to raise cash. The airline has 22 wide-body planes (10 Boeing 777s and 12 Airbus A330 aircraft). Six A330s are on operating lease and the remaining 16 are on a financial lease.
Currently, Jet Airways does not fly all its wide-body planes. It only uses five Boeing 777s and seven A330 aircraft and has leased the remaining 10 aircraft to Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines. The Boeing 777-300ERs planes being flown by Jet Airways service have been manufactured in 2007 and 2008.

NEW DELHI: The Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet AirwaysBSE 1.78 % would soon draw up plans to expand in the US skies following the restoration last week by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of India’s aviation safety rating to Category-1, sources have said.
The airline would also take on board its strategic investment partner Etihad while carrying out the exercise to avoid any “cannibalisation” of routes, they said.
Jet Airways currently operates a daily direct service from New Delhi to Newark while Etihad, which holds a 24 per cent stake in Goyal’s airline, flies to six US cities.
“The US market throws up a lot of opportunities and we would like to enhance our presence there. There are no immediate plans as such but we will definitely chalk out one soon,” airline sources told PTI here.
