Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, joined celebrations at Abu Dhabi International Airport yesterday to welcome the arrival of its equity and codeshare partner Alitalia’s inaugural flights from Venice and Milan to the UAE capital.
A traditional water cannon salute was arranged to mark the occasion, with Alitalia’s CEO Silvano Cassano and Chief Customer Officer Aubrey Tiedt travelling onboard the inaugural flight from Venice, along with Enrico Marchi, Chairman of the SAVE Group – Venice Airport.
The senior delegation was greeted on arrival by Bruno Matheu, Etihad Airways Chief Operating Officer Equity Partners, and officials from Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC).
Peter Baumgartner, Chief Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “Network development has been placed at the heart of Alitalia’s ambitious development strategy and we are delighted to codeshare on both of these new routes, which are the first to be launched by Alitalia since Etihad Airways acquired a 49 per cent stake in the airline.

MUMBAI: UAE’s flag carrier Etihad Airways, which owns 24 per cent in Jet Airways, today sounded bullish on India, saying over the next year it will add more flights, beginning with a third daily service from New Delhi to Abu Dhabi from May 1.
This additional flight from the national capital will take its weekly services to 140, making it the largest Gulf carrier in the country connecting 11 cities with Kolkata being the latest destination from early this month.
These increases mean from May, Etihad and Jet will together offer 224 weekly return flights connecting 15 Indian cities, making it the largest Gulf carrier, Etihad said in a statement quoting its President & Chief Executive James Hogan.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has donated more than UAE dirhams 100,000 to underprivileged communities in Sri Lanka.
A delegation from Etihad Airways visited Sri Lanka this week to present the donation, raised through a series of charitable initiatives in Abu Dhabi.

The delegation also included Ali Al Shamsi, Vice President of Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Hub, Adil Al Mulla Vice President Procurement and Supply Management, Dr Nadia Bastaki, Vice President Medical Services and Kumar De Silva, Etihad Airways’ General Manager in Sri Lanka, along with the airline’s Colombo-based staff.
Etihad Airways’ award-winning loyalty program, Etihad Guest is making travel more convenient by introducing a new payment feature onto its membership card. walletplus™, powered by Visa, allows members to load travel money onto their Etihad Guest card and convert it to 11 different foreign currencies to spend whenever they are travelling abroad.
The membership card can be loaded in advance, enabling card holders to better manage their travel budgets by locking in competitive exchange rates in real time before they travel. Pre-loading the card also means that members are immediately able to spend in the local currency upon arrival in another country, without having to first exchange or transfer funds at a bank or foreign exchange.
Etihad Airways has announced plans to boost the number of UAE nationals employed in the airline substantially as part of its award winning UAE national development strategy. More than 6,000 Emiratis will be offered jobs that span the spectrum of the airline’s operations over the next five years.
The UAE flag carrier will continue to utilise the strategic collaborations it has formed with a range of UAE government, educational and Emiratisation institutions with the aim of offering Emiratis various opportunities to develop a long and rewarding career in the airline business.
One of Etihad Airways’ major collaborations is its participation in the Absher initiative which was conceived by the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to support Emiratisation and create new jobs for skilled Emiratis in the UAE labour market.
